March Madness

What?  You don't watch basketball this way?

The Garden - It Begins

We've embarked upon Garden Season 2011.  We always start out very ambitious, dreaming of luscious rows of veggies.  Last year we pared down and only did a few basics.  Only the tomato and cucumber survived to give us a tiny little harvest.

We're getting bigger this year.  Or so we hope.

The plan:
Cherry Tomatoes - we have a fairly good track record with these.  Not many made it into the house last year because Colin would make a beeline for the ripe red ones and before I could get to him, into his mouth they would go.  He's promised to leave us some this year.
Cucumber - another winner.  We had fewer last year than the year before but we're good for at least a few (dozen).
Lettuce - not a winner but we keep trying.  We can get it to grow but it always tastes bitter and we don't eat it.
Spinach - a new entry this year.  I have no expectations so I won't be disappointed if it doesn't work.
Okra - another new try.  I hate it.  John likes it.
Summer Squash - I can't remember if we've tried this one before.  I think I would remember if we had been successful.  We discovered last summer that both the boys love squash (I hate it).
Green and Red Peppers - We had good success a couple years ago.  They never made it past the sprout stage last year.
Corn - I've given up on this one but John continues to try it year after year.  This year he's planted 3 or 4 varieties.
Casaba Melon - This one is a long shot.  We saved some seed from a melon we got in our CSA bag last summer.  It was locally grown so we know it's possible.  We'll see if it's possible for us.
Asparagus - new this year.  The package is still sitting on our kitchen counter.

Seed starts in the kitchen window

Cucumber sprouts

So there you have it.  Depending on how well things go - I may become that crazy lady at church who brings sacks full of tomatoes and makes people take them home.

If I Tweeted

On the left side of my desk is a candy bar (a gift from a co-worker).  On the right side of my desk is a tangarine (I brought it from home).  They're deep in battle for my affections.

Pictures from the Park

Chad and Katie watched the boys last weekend while we attended a wedding.  Katie brought her fancy camera and took pictures.

Thanks Chad and Katie for such a good time and for sharing your pictures.

Random Musings - In a List

1.  The other night, Seth asked me what I was fixing for dinner.  I told him we were having chicken enchiladas.  He pumped his fist in the air and said, "That's what I'm talkin' about" and walked away.

2.  I've been "meal-planning" for a month and a half now and it has changed my life.  The mid-week grocery runs were sucking the life right out of me.  Now, I write out a menu for the 5-day work week and make my grocery list to match.  We've saved time and money and we can jump right into making dinner as soon as we get home.  It makes me more giddy than it should.

3.  Recently I asked Seth if he knew how to spell his name.  He said, "Yes...S-E-T-H-L-and a dot".

4.  We had a thunderstorm last Sunday that knocked our power out.  It was around bedtime so when the lights went out, it was completely dark.  You know how it gets really quiet when the hum of various appliances stops?  I knew the boys would be scared but luckily I was upstairs with them when it happened.  I just calmly said, "okay boys, the lights are broken but every thing's going to be just fine.  Mommy's right here and I'm going to come find you (they were really only a few feet away but in opposite directions).  I felt Seth's hand first and told him to hold onto my pants.  He whimpered a bit and then followed me to find Colin.  We're in the throws of potty-training (Lord help us!) so I knew Colin was somewhere near the bathroom.  I also knew he had no clothes on and could potentially be...eh...messy.  I found him after just a few moments and was happy to discover that he was clean and dry (although that meant his time on the pot was unsuccessful).  John was out in the garage when it happened so the three of us just huddled up and waited for John to come inside to help.  Seth kept a death-grip on my neck and Colin, in all his glory, sat down and sucked his thumb.  John made it in and gathered flashlights and candles.

We think our transformer was struck by lightening but the utility company came out and fixed us right up.  The boys got to watch the utility truck with their flashing lights .  When our lights came back on the boys waved out the window and Colin said, "Tank you re-pay man" (Translation:  Thank you repair man).

At daycare the next day, Seth's class was learning about the tundra.  The teachers asked them "What are some things we can do to help save the tundra?"  Seth said, "Fix the lights".

5.  We have one more night of itty-bitty-basketball.  Seth has spent 4 weeks learning the "fundamentals" and next Monday night they play their one and only game.  I have a strange feeling that the 4 weeks of fundamentals aren't going to make any difference.  It will however, be entertaining.

6.  Recently, we've seen various people (all from different parts of our lives - work, church, etc) struggle in their marriage.  It's heart-wrenching and complicated and easy to judge.  This is really just for my benefit and his - but this guy...

I love him.  He's all mine.
