Christmas 2014

Since the clock and calendar are about to click over to a new year, it's probably time to document our holiday highlights.

We were lucky to spend time with both sides of our family this year.  First with the Robinsons...
(Blogger is driving me out of my ever-lovin' mind and I can't get pictures in the right order or size...and I give up!)

My sister made me this blanket and I love it!  So soft and cuddly!

The boys with their Christmas Eve PJ's from Grandma
Colin asked for cowboy boots and a cowboy hat and Grandpa and Grandma delivered!
Seth wanted "indoor soccer shoes" and once again Grandpa and Grandma came through.

As a Christmas gift this year mommy and daddy gave Seth and Colin their own rooms.  They spent the night before at Aunt Kelly's while John and I worked on getting their rooms ready.  It was a complete surprise.  They each opened a small box that told them they could find their present upstairs.

Then this happened...

* I was in charge of filming Colin's reaction and John was in charge of filming Seth's and since posting to Blogger is currently like trying to build a house of cards, you'll just have to get this perspective.

After a few days with my parents we headed to Oklahoma to visit John's side of the family.

This is how you transport a Christmas tree in the country.

I love decorating the cabin for Christmas.  We hunt for a real tree on Christmas Eve and decorate with whatever we can find.  This year we found the perfect tree.  Some years the tree is tiny and other years its gigantic.  This year it was just right.  And I made garland out of cedar branches and real live holly.  I feel like Laura Ingalls!

The boys with cousin Lane

We had a wonderful Christmas...now onto the new year!

For Grandma - Baking Extravaganza 2014

Just a few pictures from this year's baking extravaganza.

Seth is helping tie ribbons on popcorn balls but he also seems to have the "umm...am I gonna be able to eat any of this?" look on his face.

Kelly is way more crafty than I am.  Every bit of these are homemade.

Both boys loved shaking powdered sugar onto the honey cookies. I hope my Grandma sees this picture and smiles.
Baking Extravaganza 2014 totals:
25 loaves of pumpkin bread
80 honey cookies
70 popcorn balls
15 bags of dried apple chex mix
30 or so decorated sugar cookies
and a partridge in a pear tree

For a look back - 2013, 2012, 2011 (and recipes)

Happy Halloween 2014

Since we're one week from Thanksgiving it's probably time to post pictures of the boys from Halloween.

Halloween this year was chiiiiilly!  The boys refused to wear coats even though I assured them that their coats would fit underneath their costumes.  Still...they flat refused.  In comes Love and Logic parenting. John and I bundled up and headed out with Batman and Rafael, the ninja turtle.

15 minutes later we were back home after rescuing a sobbing ninja turtle who was "freezing to death".  I refrained from saying I told you so.  That is anti-love and logic. Instead I said we can try again next year.

They were fine going home to get started on their candy haul.

For a look back to Halloween past...2013, 2012, 2011.

Bye Bye Bronco

This is John.  I sold my Bronco today.  Before I signed the title over I glanced at it and noticed that I bought it over ten years ago in April of 2004.  I was a young single guy, tired of trying to drive my pickup through the Kansas snow.  I fell in love with the 1978 and 79 broncos because they were built to last with one of the strongest 4x4 setups ever made.  It was short and stubby, with a determined look about it.  It looked like the 70’s. But not like the sissy disco 70’s, but like the flannel cowboy 70’s.

The bronco got me through lots of Kansas winters.
It pulled people out of ditches.
It took a trip with me to Lake of the Ozarks.
It hauled the skid steer that helped build our house.
Later it took me and the boys camping and fishing at a few of our local lakes.
It hauled tons of firewood to keep us warm in the winter.

It always caught attention.  It seemed to appeal to kids especially.  I remember one kid out at Hillsdale Lake asked me if it was a race car.  A girl who saw it told me she wished her dad drove it instead of the boring Mercedes that he owned.  I agreed with her that it was the superior vehicle.  And of course Seth and Colin loved it too.

I loved how it looked with the top off, and I loved to drive it around that way when I could.  I loved the fact that parts for it were dirt cheap, and considering how old it was it seemed like it hardly ever broke down.

So why did I sell it?

Well, I don’t drive it as much as I used to.  The Durango is great in the snow and a whole lot warmer.
I just got tired of that thing I have to do when it is cold and I come to a stop sign, and I put my left foot on the clutch and my right toe on the brake and my right heel on the gas to keep it from dying.
With two young boys I was never getting time to work on it.
I didn’t have the money to fix it up the way I always wanted to.  It needed an upholstery job and a new exhaust system.
And yes, the fact that we bought a piano recently plays into the whole thing.  With a large purchase like that we needed the extra money.
But I’m not a martyr.  I’m a very lucky man with two wonderful little boys who take up all of my time.  And I have an amazing wife who plays so beautifully.  I’ve always said that I never feel richer than when I am sitting at home with a book listening to Kim play the piano.

After I pocketed the money and waved goodbye to the Bronco I went inside and picked up Colin so he could see it drive away out the kitchen window.  He immediately started crying and berating me for selling it.  It was really therapeutic for me to hold him because he conveyed on the outside what I was feeling on the inside.  And as I explained to him the reasons why, I was really explaining them to myself all over again, assuring myself that I had made the right decision.

I did.  And I’m sad.  But oh so blessed.  Thank you God.

If I Tweeted...

Hearing country music while I shop at Ikea is a little discombobulating.

Happy Anniversary 2014

Today John and I celebrate 8 years of wedded bliss.

We bribed the boys with brightly packaged tv dinners (with glitter sprinkles they could add to their chocolate pudding - ick!) around 6pm.  Tucked them into bed around 8 pm and then enjoyed a candlelight dinner by the fire just the two of us.

Happy Anniversary Husband!

GO ROYALS!!!
